Vijay’s TVK makes fresh bid for majority, reaches out to AMMK lone MLA amid Tamil Nadu deadlock
Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has reportedly reached out to one more MLA as the race to form the next Tamil Nadu government intensifies.
With no party crossing the majority mark, TVK is now seeking support from Kamaraj S, the lone winning legislator of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam led by TTV Dhinakaran.
Why TVK needs more numbers
TVK stunned the state by winning 108 of 234 seats, breaking the 62-year dominance of the Dravidian giants Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
But with the majority mark at 118, Vijay still needs 10 more MLAs to stake a secure claim.
The Indian National Congress has already pledged support, adding five legislators to TVK’s tally, while outreach is also underway to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Left parties.
Governor not yet convinced
Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar is reportedly unconvinced that TVK can run a stable government without firm majority backing.
Sources say Vijay met the governor again after staking a claim, where he was asked how he would govern with 113 supporters and which parties were ready to back him formally.
Vijay is learnt to have said he is ready for a floor test, but the governor has reportedly asked him to prove a majority before oath-taking.
Thol Thirumavalavan said the VCK high-level committee will meet tomorrow before taking a final call. Left parties are also expected to hold internal discussions.
DMK gives allies free hand
Outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK are said to have allowed smaller allies to decide independently whether to support TVK.
The DMK has reportedly said its main objective is to avoid another election and ensure a stable government without giving space to “communal forces.”
Resort politics returns
Amid fears of defections, AIADMK has reportedly moved around a dozen newly elected MLAs to Puducherry in a familiar show of resort politics.
Tamil Nadu now waits for the next 24 hours, with Vijay scrambling for numbers and the governor holding the key to whether TVK gets its power shot.
