Vijay to take oath today as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in historic shift

| @indiablooms | May 10, 2026, at 09:18 am

Vijay will take oath on Sunday as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a watershed moment in the state's political history after days of uncertainty over the numbers needed to form a stable government.

With this, Vijay becomes the first leader outside the traditional Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) formations to head the Tamil Nadu government since 1967.

Coalition backing after last-minute talks

The new government is a coalition backed by Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League.

The alliance was stitched together after hectic negotiations as TVK worked to secure enough MLAs to cross the majority mark.

First cabinet of 10 ministers

Vijay is expected to be sworn in along with an initial cabinet of nine ministers:

K A Sengottaiyan
Aadhav Arjuna
Raj Mohan
Nirmal Kumar
N Anand
T K Prabhu
P Venkatraman
Keerthana
Arun Raj

The Vijay-led government must prove its majority in the Assembly before May 13, making the coming days crucial for the survival of the fledgling administration.

Cabinet balances experience and youth

Though TVK is a new party, many of the ministers are seasoned political figures with backgrounds in either the DMK or AIADMK.

The cabinet is seen as Vijay’s attempt to blend political experience, youth representation, technocrats and caste equations, while rewarding loyalists who helped power TVK’s dramatic rise.
