Lucknow, Mar 8 (IBNS): After a 12-hour-long standoff, an operation by the Uttar Pradesh police ended on Wednesday with the terror suspect holed up in a house on the outskirts of Lucknow found dead.

Uttar Pradesh ADG Daljit Chaudhary said they found one person dead inside the house after breaking in. Police said despite best efforts of the anti-terror squad the suspect could not be caught alive from the house in Thakurganj.

Police earlier told media that there were at least two terrorists holed up in the house. But police found one body.

While attempts were being made to capture the suspect alive, the latter refused to surrender.

Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad was engaged in the operation to flush out suspect Mohammed Saiful from the Thakurganj  house.

The area was cordoned off to capture the terrorist who could be ISIS operative and linked to a train blast Tuesday morning in Madhya Pradesh in which nine were wounded.

Reports said the terrorist used "chilli bombs" against the cops engaged in the operation in which some 20-odd commandos were active.

Senior police official Daljit Chaudhary earlier told media: "Had received inputs about presence of some suspects in Kanpur and Lucknow."

He said one person was arrested from Kanpur.

The incident occurred at a time when Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to vote in the last phase of polling on Wednesday.

The result is scheduled to be announced on Mar 11.
