A couple consumed some poisonous substances and committed suicide allegedly over mutual discord in the Pailani area of Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said on Tuesday.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Laxmi Niwas Mishra said that Virendra Singh (55), a resident of Lasra village, had a dispute with his wife Shanti (52) over some issue.

"After the dispute, Shanti consumed some poisonous substances, and when Virendra came to know about this, he too consumed the same substances. The couple died during the night hours," he said.

He said that on Tuesday, when the couple did not come out of their house till late, the neighbours got suspicious and informed the police.

"The spot was inspected by the field unit along with a dog squad in detail in the presence of senior officers. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death," he said.
