U.S. Vice President JD Vance to arrive in India for four-day visit today

Vice President JD Vance and his family will arrive in India on Monday for a four-day visit to the South Asian nation, which will take place in the shadow of President Donald Trump's recent announcement of US trade tariffs.

"The Vice President of the United States of America, H.E. Mr. J.D. Vance, will pay an Official Visit to India from 21 to 24 April 2025," read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs earlier.

"He will be accompanied by Second Lady Mrs. Usha Vance, their children, and senior members of the U.S. Administration," the statement said.

This will be Vice President Vance’s first visit to India.

The US vice president, along with his wife, Usha Vance, and their three children- Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel- are scheduled to land at the Palam airbase here at 10 am on Monday.

Modi To Host Dinner

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to host a dinner for JD Vance and his wife Usha on Monday evening, after holding talks with the US Vice President focusing on trade, tariff, and several other key issues, media reports said.

Besides Delhi, Vance and his family will travel to Jaipur and Agra.

At least five senior officials, including those from the Pentagon and the State Department, will accompany Vance during his India visit.

After arrival in Delhi, Vance and his family are scheduled to visit the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple and could also venture to a shopping complex selling traditional Indian handcrafted goods, media reports said.

'Opportunity'

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said the visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to review the progress in bilateral relations and the implementation of the outcomes of the India-U.S. Joint Statement issued on 13 February 2025 during the visit of the Prime Minister to the US.

"The two sides will also exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest," MEA said.

Modi met Donald Trump during his visit to the USA in February, just days after the President's inauguration ceremony was held.

Amid a trade war with China, Donald Trump this month announced a 90-day hold on the implementation of the latest tariffs, announced by his administration, for all other countries, including India, except Beijing.

As per the Indian Embassy website,  US is the largest trading partner of India with overall bilateral trade in goods and services of $190.1 billion for calendar year 2023.
