A 30-year-old youth shot himself and committed suicide in front of his girlfriend in an SUV in Kotwali area of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, a police official said here on Friday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vaibhav Pandey said that Sonu, a resident of Jamua village, had been having an affair with a girl for the last 8 to 9 months.

"As Sonu was already married, his family members were against his affair," he said.

He said that late on Thursday night Sonu had a dispute with family members over phone on this issue in the presence of his girlfriend.

"After dispute with the family members, Sonu shot himself in an SUV with an illicit firearm. He was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead," the DSP said.
