Telangana tunnel collapse: Rescue operation in progress as 8 workers still trapped

Hyderabad/IBNS: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is still working to rescue eight workers who are trapped after an under-construction of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana's Nalgonda district collapsed on Saturday, media reports said.

The workers are trapped for nearly 48 hours.

A three-meter section of the roof of an under-construction work had collapsed near the Domalapenta Nagarkurnool district, Telangana.

The collapse took place only four days after the resumption of work.

While eight got trapped, some others managed to escape.

The visuals on Monday show the rescue workers of four NDRF teams advancing into the tunnel despite challenging conditions.

The NDRF is now working to drain out the accumulated water in the tunnel.

The team is facing challenges due to the debris caused by the collapse.

"We had reached till the end of the Tunnel Boring Machine, TBM. We shouted and tried to get any reply from the trapped workers but unfortunately we could not know anything because there is a patch of around 200 meters which is filled with debris.

"Till the debris is cleared we cannot know the exact location of the victims," the NDRF Deputy Commandant said as quoted by Deccan Chronicle.
