Tamil Nadu: Vijay’s TVK wins Madurantakam, Dharapuram bypolls

There appears to be no slowdown in the popularity of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, as the party won the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections on Friday.

TVK workers celebrated the victories after the party’s candidates, Maragatham Kumaravel and Sathyabama, defeated their respective Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) rivals.

In Madurantakam, Maragatham Kumaravel won by a margin of 17,554 votes, securing 61,470 votes against DMK candidate Paranthaman’s 43,916.

In Dharapuram, Sathyabama polled 62,596 votes, defeating her nearest rival, DMK candidate Sukanya, who secured 52,400 votes, by a margin of 10,196.

The DMK finished second in both constituencies, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) came third.

The by-elections were necessitated after the legislators elected from the two constituencies on AIADMK tickets resigned from the Assembly and joined TVK.

Meanwhile, in Puducherry, All India NR Congress (AINRC) candidate Ashok Anand won the Thattanchavady Assembly by-election by a margin of 8,482 votes.
