Swaraj meets SL President Sirisena

Colombo, Mar 6 (IBNS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday arrived in Sri Lanka and met country's president Maithripala Sirisena here.

MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted: "Paving way for 1st bilateral visit of India's PM to Sri Lanka in 28 yrs. Minister @SushmaSwaraj meets Prez Sirisena."

  Swaraj is visiting the island nation days before India Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the country.

Modi will leave  on March 10 on a five-day visit to Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka as part of the effort to strengthen relations with the neighbouring countries.

The  External Affairs Ministry announced on Friday that on March 11, in Seychelles, Modi will hold bilateral discussions with President James Alexis Michel.

The PM will be in Mauritius on March 11 and 12 , holding  meetings with his Mauritian counterpart, Sir Anerood Jugnauth and attending the country's National Day celebrations.

Modi will be visiting Sri Lanka  from  March 13 and 14 where he will hold meetings with Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and other senior political leaders.

"The visit of the Prime Minister to our friendly maritime neighbours is reflective of India's desire to further strengthen our ties in the Indian Ocean region," the MEA said.
