Kolkata, Sep 14 (IBNS): At least one person was killed and another seriously injured in an explosion that took place at an illegal fireworks factory-cum-warehouse at Bibiganj area in West Bengal's West Medinipur district on Thursday late evening, reports said.

According to locals, a loud explosion was heard from a house at Bibiganj where firecrackers were being made and stored illegally.

Local police and one fire tender rushed to the scene and started rescue operation.

"We rescued two persons- a man and a woman- from the house and sent them to a local hospital where one of them was pronounced dead," an official of state fire and emergency services told IBNS.

According to police reports, the deceased has been identified as Momtaj Khatun while her husband Mani Rafique is currently undergoing treatment.

A local police official told IBNS, "There was no fireworks factory at the house. Firecrackers were stored there illegally which might have led to the explosion."

"We have started probe into the matter and detained one person for interrogation," the official added.
