Srinagar acid attack: Two detained, says police

Srinagar, Dec 25 (IBNS): A fortnight-long mystery behind the acid attack on a law student in the Nowhsehra area of the Srinagar city ended on Thursday with the arrest of two friends for throwing acid on a female Law Student earlier this month.
Giving details, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, Abdul Gani Mir identified the conspirator as Irshad Wani alias Sunny of Wazir Bagh and executor as Umar Noor Dar of Bemina Srinagar.

IGP Mir said that Irshad alias Sunny was stalking the victim for quite some time.

"His advances bore no results and when the girl rejected and denounced his movements, Irshad chalked out a plan and took his another friend Omar into confidence," Mir said adding that Omar helped his fiend to carry out the acid attack for petty financial gains.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old acid attack victim, who was shifted to Chennai for specialized treatment of her burn injuries, underwent another surgery on Dec 23.

The girl has been operated upon twice so far, sources said, adding a portion of her face and one of the eyes were badly damaged in the attack.

Mir said that Irshad carefully planned every step of the gruesome attack and he himself and along with his friend monitored the spot of incident beforehand.

"On the fateful day, Omar carried out this horrendous attack almost to perfection. He borrowed the vehicle of his uncle who knew nothing of his evil intent. He left home in the vehicle at around 9:15 in the morning and after carrying out his dastardly attack returned home at around 11:30 in the afternoon," said Mir.

"His right hand was itself burned in the incident of acid throwing while trying to make a quick gateway. On the way back he threw the beaker with which he had thrown the acid near Achan landfill site and had his hand bandaged," Mir said adding that Irshad visited Omar later the same day and cooked up a story to his family that he and the vehicle had been involved in an accident.

Replying to a question, Mir said that it was a challenging job for the police.

"It was a blind case while the victim was unable to cooperate with the police as she was referred to Chennai for treatment. From social responsibility view, police acted swiftly and constituted all but 9 teams to crack the case," he said adding that a number of people were questioned while the records about 451 Maruti
vehicles were thoroughly checked.

He said that police have taken the crime against women seriously.

The acid attack on the 21-year-old student had haggard extensive condemnation with political parties demanding arrest of culprits and stern castigation to them.
