SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav's wife Sadhana Gupta dies

Gurugram: Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh's wife Sadhana Gupta, passed away in a private hospital in Gurugram on Saturday.

Gurugram: Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh's wife Sadhana Gupta, passed away in a private hospital in Gurugram on Saturday.

She was admitted to Medanata Hospital four days ago for the treatment of a lung infection.

Her mortal remains are being taken to Lucknow and is expected to reach there by late evening, said media reports.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath took to twitter to condole the death.

He wrote: "The demise of Smt. Sadhna ji, wife of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradeh, Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav ji is extremely sad. My condolences are with the bereaved family members.

"May Lord Shri Ram grant the departed soul a place at his feet and strength to his family members to bear this loss. Om Shanti!"

Deputy Chief Minister of UP Keshav Prasad Maurya conveyed his condolences to Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family.

His tweet read, "Received the sad news of the demise of Sadhna Gupta, wife of former Chief Minister Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav ji, may the Lord give place to the holy soul at his feet. Give courage to Mulayam Singh ji and his family members to bear this loss."

Samajwadi Party's official Twitter handle also posted a condolence message on the death of the party founder's spouse.

  Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal, in a tweet, said, "Got the very sad news of the demise of formed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji's wife Sadhna Gupta ji. May God give Mulayam Singh Ji and his family the strength to bear this loss. May God give peace to the noble soul. Om Shanti."

Sadhana Gupta is Mulayam Singh Yadav's second wife. According to a report in Amar Ujala's Hindi news portal, Sadhana and Mulayam's relationship started in 1982 when he was still married to Malati Yadav.

Malati Yadav had been in a vegetative state from 1973 until her death in May 2003 following complications while giving birth to their only child, Akhilesh Yadav.

However, Sadhana Gupta got the status of Mulayam's wife in 2003, when Akhilesh Yadav's mother and Mulayam's first wife, Malati Yadav, died, according to an India Today report.

The relationship came to light only in 2007, when the it was admitted by the SP leader in the Supreme Court.

Mulayam Singh Yadav has a son, Prateek Gupta, with his second wife.
