Shelling by Pakistan kills 5 in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu, Aug 15 (IBNS) Guns roared from the two sides of LoC on Saturday which left five civilians, including a Sarpanch and a lecturer, dead and 25 others injured.

Pakistan resorted to heavy firing and shelling along Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sector of Poonch on Saturday, officials said.

Officials told IBNS that the Pakistan army resorted to shelling in various villages of the Balakote sector, including Panjni, Dabbi, Balakote Forward and Basoni, since 10 am in the morning.

The shelling also took place in Saujian sector.

"The firing continued throughout the day with high intensity leading to death of three persons and injuring 25 others," they said.

Few of the deceased have been identified as Sarpanch of Balakote Karamat (48), lecturer Abdul Rehman (45) S/O Khadim Hussain and Mohammad Sheeraz (17) S/O Guldad from from Basoni.

Officials said that the firing from Pakistan is underway.

Sources told IBNS that the Sarpanch and Lecturer were coming after participating in an Independence Day function at Pine Wood School in Hamerpore.

The duo, sources said, were traveling in a car when a shell hit them.

Out of 25, two critically injured persons were airlifted to Army Hospital Rajouri.

The two were identified as Muhammad Nayeem and Muhammad Amin.

Many houses also sustained damage in the exchange of fire.

Meanwhile, Pakistan media reported that one person was killed and 4 others were injured in Indian shelling.
