Sessions and debates get influenced: PM Modi on frequent elections in India

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his dissatisfaction over the frequent elections in the country hampering the sessions in Parliament, rebooting his stance in favour of a single election in five years with a few days to go for the polls in five states.

Addressing the media ahead of the budget session which began on Monday, the Prime Minister said, "It is true that the sessions and debates get influenced by frequent elections.

"But elections are in their own place and we will have to make the budget session fruitful as much as possible to create an opportunity to take our economy to the next level in the coming fiscal year."

Elections in five states, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, will be held between Feb 10 and Mar 7 with the declaration of results on Mar 10.

In Mar-Apr last year, assembly elections were held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.

Though Modi had earlier kickstarted the discussion on a single election for the country including all states to concentrate better on administration and save expenditure, the idea failed to gather steam in a political structure of disparate colours.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will on Tuesday present the Union Budget in Parliament.
