Resentment in Kashmir 'Varsity over ban on attending seminar
Srinagar, June 1 (IBNS) The Kashmir University has disallowed students to organise a seminar in remembrance of two rape and murder victims, triggering resentment in the campus.
The alleged rape and murder of Asiya Jan and her sister-in-law Neelofar took place on May 29-30 in 2009 leading to widespread protests and shutdowns in the Valley.
The proposed seminar, “Sexual Violence: India’s Weapon of War in Kashmir”, was to be held outside the lawns of Iqbal Library,but the university authorities put a bar on it.
“The University administration has acted like ‘Fascists'. The Vice Chancellor has circulated a notice ordering all students to remain in their classes and the VC may inspect them anytime,” student representatives said.
They alleged that the University administration is resorting to undemocratic means to choke the sentiments and voice of dissent of the student’s community.
Confirming the university action to IBNS, Naseer Iqbal, Chief proctor of the university, said, "it was a peak academic session and we did not want any disturbance in the 'versity."
