Kolkata, Jul 21 (IBNS): The police on Monday arrested the main accused in the alleged rape of a teenaged girl at Shibpur area in Howrah district of West Bengal.

According to police reports, Manirul Purkait, the main accused was arrested from Kultali in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Monday night.

On Sunday evening, one 16-year-old teenaged girl was found in an unconscious state at the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden at Shibpur area in Howrah district of West Bengal.

After noticing some blood spot in her clothes, police suspected that the girl was raped or gangraped.

The teen was rushed to the South Howrah State General Hospital and shifted to Howrah State General Hospital later.

The girl is being treated in Howrah State General Hospital.

According to the hospital sources, the girl is in a stable condition.

After questioning the girl, police came to know that she is a resident of Bargram at Bishnupur in Bankura district of West Bengal and she fled from her house.

After arriving at the Howrah railway station, she called Manirul Purkait and went to the Shibpur Botanical Garden with him.

When asked about the security inside Botanical Garden compound, the director of the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden, Arabinda Pramanik told IBNS: "With only 16 security guards, we can never cover this huge area (over 109 hectares). Police should provide good security here. Fortunately the girl was not murdered."

Manirul Purkait was produced at Howrah court on Tuesday and sent to the police custody.
