Chennai, Oct 7 (IBNS) :Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday visited ailing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who has been undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai.

Gandhi's visit followed an alert sounded over Jayalalithaa's health as an AIIMS doctor said that infection in her blood isn't contained, according to a Hindustan Times report.

The doctor, who requested anonymity, was quoted by a  daily as saying, "She has been in the hospital ICU for quite some time now, which means the infection in her blood isn’t contained.”

"It usually starts with fever and dehydration and then the condition starts deteriorating," the doctor added.

Meanwhile, a team of experts were flown in from AIIMS Delhi.

Specialists of heart, lungs and anesthesia were sent to Chennai to take care of the ailing "Amma" as she is fondly called by her supporters.

The latest development is fueling speculations about her deteriorating health, which her party and supporters have not acknowledged so far.

Officials from Apollo Hospitals, where the lawmaker is undergoing treatment, said she needs a longer stay there.

Speculations are also rife that the 68-year-old may be suffering from multi organ failure.

Security was  beefed at the hospital  following the visit of Rahul Gandhi.
