Bhopal, Oct 7 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi escaped unhurt after a freak fire broke out during his rally in Madhya Pradesh's city of Jabalpur on Saturday.

Gandhi participated in an 8-km-long rally in the state on Saturday.

Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh is scheduled to take place on Nov 28.

A major mishap was averted after a ball of flame erupted when few supporters had brought a heavy multi-tiered lamp to welcome the Congress leader.

As per a video which has gone viral, a fireball could be seen suddenly erupting at the spot when flames of the lamp touched a bunch of gas balloons which were present over the people at the spot.

The blaze was out within few seconds.

No one was hurt in the incident, reports said.

Gandhi, who was traveling on an open jeep, escaped unhurt.

Superintendent of Police Amit Singh told NDTV: "They were Congress workers... The mandatory 15 feet distance was very much there and there was no lathicharge ... nowhere is it mentioned in the blue book that workers can't hold balloons and perform aarti."
