Rahul Gandhi at ED office for third straight day grilling in National Herald case

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi is at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office for the third straight day grilling in connection with a money laundering case centred on National Herald newspaper which is owned by Young India Limited.

Like the first two days, Rahul is accompanied by his politician sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In a quite similar picture like Monday and Tuesday, Congress workers, who were protesting against the ED summons to Rahul on the streets of Delhi, were detained and taken away on a bus by police.

What is the case?

As per the complaint filed in the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate, Associated Journals Limited (AJL) took an interest-free loan of Rs 90.25 crore from the Congress, which was not paid back.

A closely held company, Young India, was incorporated in Nov 2010 with a capital of Rs 50 lakh, and acquired almost all the shareholding of AJL and its properties.

BJP slams Congress protest

Union Minister Smriti Irani Monday accused the Congress of trying to pressurise the Enforcement Directorate by holding protests and said it was an attempt to save the assets of Gandhi family.

"Congress leaders have taken to the street to pressurize an investigating agency openly because their corruption has been exposed," Irani, who had defeated Rahul in Amethi in 2019, said.

Congress hits back

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Wednesday said the last eight years will be seen as a 'dark chapter' in the history of independent India, and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make an appeal for peace amid rising communal tension.

On Wednesday, restrictions in Central Delhi continued with several roads being barricaded.

All entries to Congress headquarters at Akbar Road remained under heavy police presence and only selected people were allowed entry.
