Prophet row: Suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma summoned by Kolkata Police

Kolkata/IBNS: The Kolkata Police have summoned suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her controversial Prophet remark which triggered a row in recent weeks.

Kolkata Police on Monday served a notice under CrPC section 41 asking Nupur Sharma to appear before the investigating officer (IO) at Narkeldanga Police Station on June 20.

Recently, a complaint was lodged against the now-suspended BJP leader at Narkeldanga PS over the Prophet remark row.

Sharma's controversial comment on Prophet Mohammed has drawn fury from the Muslims community members across the country.

Violent protests against the comment have taken place in different corners of the country, including in West Bengal, for the past several days.

Reports of vandalism and ransacking emerged from West Bengal's densely Muslim populated district Howrah, which also houses the state secretariat.

Following backlash from the Gulf countries, the BJP swung into action and suspended Sharma and her colleague Naveen Jindal who too had made a controversial comment on Prophet Muhammed.

Till Saturday, over 200 people in Uttar Pradesh and around 70 in West Bengal have been arrested in connection with the violent protests, road-railroad blockades and vandalism that have left the common people suffering due to the imposition of Section 144 and suspension on internet services.

Jawed Shamim, ADG & IGP (Law & Order) told media: "There was no loss of life and no injuries were reported. More than 200 accused arrested, 42 FIRs registered. Situation is under control now, internet is restored. Section 144 implemented in Nadia's Nakashipara. Nobody will be spared no matter who it is. We ensure maximum punishment and are fully prepared to control the situation. We are trying to ensure that peace returns and are very firm in dealing with the situation. Appeal to people to refrain from rumour-mongering."
