Procession that led to Delhi's Jahangirpuri violence held without permission: Police

New Delhi/IBNS: The procession, which resulted in violent clashes in Delhi's Jahangirpuri area on Saturday, was taken out without permission, the police said on Monday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the police commissioner to act sternly in the case. 23 people including a minor have been arrested in connection with the violence.

According to the police, the main shooter Sonu Chikna, who was caught on camera firing rounds during the violence, has been arrested.

Trouble erupted in the area on Monday morning when police started looking for Chikna and questioned his family members.

When the team arrived at Sonu Chikna's home, his family and neighbours threw stones at the team. As the violence threatened to escalate, personnel of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) formed a human wall to prevent any clashes.

The violent clash took place between two communities in North-West Delhi's Jahangirpuri area after stones were pelted at a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday.

The organisers of the rally allegedly took a route next to a mosque located close to a temple.

The police said as the procession, with people holding up saffron flags, passed by the mosque, the loud volume of religious chants clashed with the azaan or Muslim call to prayers.

Ansar, one of the arrested accused, allegedly started arguing with those participating in the rally.

The altercation soon turned into a clash with both sides starting to throw stones at each other, the FIR says.

A Delhi court on Monday extended the police custody for two more days of Aslam and Ansar, who are the prime accused in the violence that erupted in Jahangirpuri area of Delhi during Hanuman Jayanti.

The Rohini court also sent four other accused to judicial custody for 14 days, they are among the 23 so far nabbed by the police in Saturday's violence.

The Delhi Police submitted before the court that Ansar and Aslam were aware of the Shobha Yatra on April 15 and then allegedly hatched a conspiracy.

The investigators are going through CCTV footage to identify others involved in the arson and attack that ensued over a small incident that triggered the violence in the Northwest Delhi area.
