President condoles passengers' death in UP train mishap

New Delhi/Gorakhpur, May 26 (IBNS): Indian president Pranab Mukherjee on Monday condoled the loss of lives in the train accident near Khalilabad in Uttar Pradesh which is feared to have left at least 30 people dead.

The death toll is likely to rise.

In a message to B.L. Joshi, Governor of Uttar Pradesh, the President said, “I am saddened to learn about the train accident in which a number of persons lost their lives and some were injured near Khalilabad in Uttar Pradesh."

"I am sure that the State Government and other agencies are taking necessary steps to provide urgent medical assistance to the injured and all possible aid to the bereaved families, who have lost their near and dear ones," Mukherjee said.

Many people were injured as the express train hit a stationary goods train near Khalilabad city.

Out of the six coaches, four were general coaches and two were AC coach- AC first class and AC two tier, reorts said.

A probe has been ordered into the mishap by Commissioner Railway Safety (Northeast circle) PK Bajpayee.

The Railways on Monday also ordered a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the family of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured. A sum of Rs 10,000 will be given to those who sustained simple injuries.

The train was going from Delhi to Gorakhpur.
