Poll debacle :Congress likely to hold Chinatan Shivir next month

| | May 31, 2016, at 06:29 pm
New Delhi, May 31(IBNS) After suffering huge electoral defeats in four states, the Congress is likely to hold a 'chintan shivir' (brainstorming session) in June.

It will be the first such exercise after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Quoting a senior party leader, who wanted to be anonymous, a CNN-News 18 report says that  such a programme is being finalised and most probably it will be held in a hill state.

Besides Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Karnataka, which is also a party-ruled state, could also be considered.

The brainstorming session is being held at a time when Rahul Gandhi's elevation to the party chief's post is being talked about in party circles.

Soon after the poll debacle, party leaders have said that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee to deliberate on the causes of the reverses would be held soon.

In the last chintan shivir held at Jaipur in January 2013, Rahul Gandhi was elevated as the party vice president and was the 'face' of the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

A section of Congress leaders reportedly believes that the party  is facing a threat to its very existence the way the Narendra Modi-led BJP and government is targeting it and its leadership.

The Congress faces the challenge of Assembly elections including in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, to be held next year. Polls in Goa, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Gujarat are also scheduled in 2017.

First such chintan shivir was organised by Sonia Gandhi at Pachmarhi in Madhya Pradesh in 1998 soon after taking over reins of the organisation.
