Poachers kill rhino in Kaziranga

Guwahati, Jan 4 (IBNS) : Poachers killed a rhino in Assam's Kaziranga National Park (KNP) on Sunday and managed to flee from the spot with its horn.

It is the first rhino poaching incident in Assam this new year.

The incident took place at Kathalchang forest camp area under Burapahar range office in the national park where poachers killed a male rhino on the wee hours of Sunday and managed to flee with its horn.

According to reports, a group comprising of five poachers entered the park and killed the rhino near the forest camp at around 4 am on Sunday.

"Forest guards recovered a  dehorned rhino carcass near the forest camp. It had bullet injuries on its body," an official of KNP said.

Forest guards recovered several empty cartridge near the rhino carcass.

Assam has lost a total of 109 one horned rhinos in the past three years. They  were all poached.

A top official of the state forest department said that poachers killed 44 rhinos in the year 2012, 29 in 2013 and 36 rhinos poached in 2014 in Kaziranga, Pobitora, Manas and Orang national park.
