Poachers kill rhino in Assam

Guwahati, June 23 (IBNS) : Poachers killed a one horned rhinoceros in Assam and fled with its horn, an official said on Tuesday.

Patrolling forest guards found the de-horned bullet injured carcass of an adult male rhino near Nilachalmari area under Dhekiajuli police station in Sonitpur district on Tuesday.

A top forest official said that the rhino came out from Orang National Park in search of food on Monday and poachers killed the it near a paddy field in the area.

"Poachers have managed to flee with its horn. Two bullet marks were found in the carcass of the male rhino, " the forest official said.

The police and forest team launched an operation against poachers in the area.

Poachers have killed at least 16 rhinos, including three in Orang National Park, this year so far.
