Kolkata/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday will address a high-voltage rally in Kolkata's iconic Brigade Parade Ground which is expected to set the ball rolling ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in the state.

This is Modi's first rally in the state after the announcement of the poll schedule.

As per reports, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is calling this rally the culmination of what they call the "Portiborton Yatra" (a campaign for change) in West Bengal.

The BJP has made elaborate arrangements for the rally to be a grand success with a record crowd presence.

Banners, posters and cut-outs of PM Modi have been put up across the city to welcome him. LED screens have been installed on the ground to broadcast PM’s speech.

According to media reports, many folk artists have been invited to perform at the event.

The BJP is massively using social media platforms to make sure a huge number of supporters' turn up at the event.

Meanwhile one of the the biggest attractions for the rally is that actor Mithun Chakraborty is likely to join PM Modi on the stage on Sunday.

The speculations that Chakraborty might join the BJP went rife after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat met the veteran actor and former Member of Parliament at his Mumbai residence on Feb 17.

The meeting had lasted for around 90 minutes and sparked speculations that Chakraborty might contest the West Bengal assembly elections.

The Central Observer of BJP for West Bengal, Kailash Vijayvargiya also met Chakraborty at the latter's residence in Belgachia.

Once considered close to the CPM, Chakraborty, 70, was a Rajya Sabha MP for the Trinamool Congress for two years, before resigning.

He had cited his ill-health as the reason behind quitting politics.

Elections for the high-octane West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases beginning March 27. The counting for the same will be held on May 2.

This time the eastern state of Bengal is all set to witness a triangular contest among the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress-Left-ISF alliance and the BJP coming into the fray.
