Ahmedabad, Aug 30 (IBNS) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched SAUNI Yojna, an irrigation scheme that he had initiated in Gujarat in 2012 as Chief Minister, reports said.

"Looking forward to being in Gujarat today for the launch of SAUNI Yojana. This scheme will truly benefit the people of Gujarat," Modi had  tweeted earlier on Tuesday.

Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation Yojna, or SAUNI, is a project that aims to solve the water problems of the draught-prone Saurashtra region of Gujarat.

According to reports, the Rs 12,000 crore project involves filling up 115 dams in the region with excess water from the Sardar Sarovar dam through a network of canal and pipelines.

The project is expected to help irrigate 4.13 lakh hectres in Saurashtra.
