PM Modi condoles demise of former Union Minister Digvijaysinh Zala

New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the demise of former Union Minister Digvijaysinh Zala.

Taking to Twitter, he said, "Anguished by the demise of former Union Minister, Shri Digvijaysinh Zala Ji. He played an active role in Gujarat and national politics."

"He will be remembered for his community service and passion towards the environment. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti," he added in his message.

Digvijaysinh Zala passed away at the age of 88 after a brief illness.

Also an MLA from Wankaner assembly constituency from 1962-67 in Gujarat, he was head of the erstwhile princely state of Wankaner in Saurashtra.

He was also a Member of Parliament from Surendranagar from 1979 to 1989 and was the first Environment Minister of the country from 1982 to 1984 under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi cabinet.

Late Zala has been credited with declaring many national parks in India to conserve wildlife and nature and took imitative with Railway Ministry to replace the wooden sleepers under railway tracks with cement ones to help save India's trees.
