Patna HC quashes Bihar government's Prohibition of Liquor Act

| | Sep 30, 2016, at 07:34 pm
Patna, Sep 30 (IBNS): The Patna High Court on Friday quashed Bihar government's Prohibition of Liquor Act, calling it 'illegal', according to media reports.

While the Opposition and others have called the ban on liquor a 'draconian' move on the part of the government, the state's Chief Minister claimed that the ban imposed on April 5 had brought positive changes in the state.

The ban called for strict penalties against family members of anyone found making, drinking or selling alcohol, media reported.

Bihar is India's third most-populous state and the most recent, after Kerala, to opt for banning alcohol. More than 13,000 people have been arrested since April, when Mr Kumar did away with his original plan to ban liquor in phases, and declared complete prohibition, reported NDTV.
