Gurdaspur, Punjab, Jul 27 (IBNS) Terrorists shot dead six people, including two policemen in Punjab early on Monday morning as they sneaked into India and opened fire at a bus before attacking a police station.

Following the incident authorities sounded an alert all along the border.

Reports said three or four terrorists are now holed up inside Dinanagar police station and have been engaged in heavy exchange of fire with security forces for hours.

There were reportedly five or six policemen at the police station when it was attacked.

The Army has reached Dinanagar to reinforce the police, who have cordoned off the area. The elite National Security Guard or NSG is on standby.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he has instructed the  BSF to 'step up vigil on the India-Pakistan border' in the wake of attack in Gurudaspur.

The terrorists in army fatigue reportedly crossed the border at Hiranagar in Jammu and entered Punjab in a white Maruti 800 they hijacked.

Before they attacked the police station at about 5.45 am, the terrorists opened fire at a Punjab Roadways bus. Seven people are said to be injured in the attacks so far.

Then they stormed into the police station after killing the policeman on guard duty and shot dead another policemen.

Five live bombs were found at a railway track not far from the Dinanagar police station,

Rail traffic between Dinanagar and Pathankot has been stopped. The Pathankot highway has been closed. Search operations are on for any more live ammunition that might have been planted.

After they crossed into India, the terrorists hijacked a white Maruti 800.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has rushed the state Director General of Police to the spot, the state government said.  It said the Chief Minister was closeted with advisors and was "keeping close minute to minute watch on the situation."
