Over 30.21 lakh voters of Nagaland and Meghalaya to decide the fate of 565 candidates tomorrow
Kohima/Shillong, Feb 26 (IBNS): Battle lines have been drawn for Tuesday’s crucial assembly polls in two Christian dominated north eastern Indian states of Nagaland and Meghalaya.
Polling will be start from 7am at 5239 polling stations in both states.
Over 30.21 lakh voters will exercise their franchise to decide the of 565 candidates in both states.
Congress has ruled 15-year in Meghalaya, but this time Congress has landed a big threat from the BJP after the saffron party has tied up with National People’s Party (NPP) founded by former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma.
NPP is also an ally partner of NDA and government partner in Manipur also.
In Meghalaya, both BJP and NPP have fielded their candidates separately, but both parties declared to form post-poll alliance.
On the other hand, BJP had dumped its 15-year old alliance partner Naga People’s Front (NPF) in Nagaland and forged with newly formed political party Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) led by three times former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and emerged as a big threat to the ruling party.
The BJP is eying to expand its footprints in the entire North East after forming government in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
The two north east states have a 60-member house each, but voting will be held for 59 constituencies in both states.
Neiphiu Rio had already declared unopposed win from the Northern Angami- II assembly constituency.
In Meghalaya, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate for Williamnagar Jonathone N Sangma was shot dead by the suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in East Garo Hills district on February 18 last.
Election results of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya will be declared on March 3.

Total candidates – 195 (5 women candidates)

Total polling stations – 3083 (58 polling stations falling under the Williamnagar constituency and voting to be held at 3025 polling stations on February 27)

Smallest constituency by electorate – Mokokchung Town (7129 voters)
Largest constituency by electorate – Ghaspani-I (65,643 voters)
Total candidates – 370 (32 women candidates)
Key politicians – Present Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma (Congress, will contest from two seats Ampathi and Songsak) , Conrad Sangma (NPP)
