Over 10 killed in Kolkata flyover tragedy

Kolkata, Mar 31 (IBNS): More than 10 people have been killed and several others have been injured as an under-construction flyover collapsed near Ganesh Talkies cinema hall in north Kolkata.

According to reports, a part of under-construction Vivekananda Flyover suddenly collapsed on the crossing of Rabindra Sarani and Vivekananda Road at around 12:30 pm.

According to locals, a huge number of vehicles and many people have been stuck under the collapsed flyover.

Rescue officials,which include  NDRF officials , are currently conducting rescue operations at the spot of the mishap.

"The situation is very pathetic. I think many people have been killed in the incident," an eye witness told IBNS.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has mourned the loss of lives in the mishap.

"Deeply saddened to know that precious lives have been lost in the Kolkata accident.My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased," Singh tweeted.

"Spoke to DG NDRF who apprised me of the situation at the accident site in Kolkata. NDRF teams have been rushed to the spot for rescue ops," he said.

TMC MP Derek O'Brien tweeted: "Monumental tragedy. Rescue ops on.Many feared dead. Chief Sec/Home Sec at site. CM headed back to Kol immediately.This is the update I have."

Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said his party will demand for an investigation into the matter.

He told media, "Common people have suffered a lot. Police reached the spot of the mishap late. We will demand for an investigation into the matter."

Traffic in this part of the city has been completely disrupted due to the disaster. Police have not declared the exact number of injuries or deaths officially so far.

Death toll may rise, according to locals accounts.
