On Prophet row, Bangladesh minister says India's 'internal matter': Report
Dhaka: The row over the remarks of two former BJP leaders on Prophet Mohammed is an internal matter of India, a senior minister of Bangladesh has said, adding that the matter hasn't gathered attention in the country unlike other Muslim nations, media reported.
According to a report in the media, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud said any statement against the Prophet should be condemned, and "congratulated" the Indian government for taking legal action over the matter.
Mahmud dismissed allegations by fundamentalists in Bangladesh that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was compromising on the issue.
He said the Bangladesh government will never compromise on the issue but on the question of officially condemning the matter, he said the matter was an external issue for Bangladesh.
Mahmud, however, said that he has himself condemned the remarks on the Prophet and also in a public meeting.
He said whenever such incidents happen anywhere in the world some Islamic parties protest and it happened in Bangladesh too.
It is not an attention-grabbing issue in Bangladesh as it is in some Arab countries, Pakistan and Malaysia.
Amid protests against the remarks made by two Indian politicians, Bangladesh's ruling party Awami League issued an official statement assuaging the concerns of minorities and distancing itself from those elements, asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces insult of any religious personality.
Mahmud said that there are some "fanatic" groups in Bangladesh, and not getting any support, make noises vigorously.
He said sometimes the statements made by these elements get media attention in India.
The same thing happens in Bangladesh when some Indian leaders give a statement against Bangladesh and its people due to domestic politics, he added.
The minister said Bangladesh doesn't expect any clarification regarding such speeches as leaders say a lot of things due to internal politics.
He stressed that Bangladesh has a very close relation with India and that the Indian government had provided 110 ambulances to Dhaka during the time of the coronavirus pandemic which reflects the depth of the ties between the two countries.
