Nuclear-capable Agni-I successfully test fired on Monday
Balasore/Bhubaneswar, Mar 14 (IBNS) India successfully test-fired an indigenously built nuclear-capable Agni-I missile on Monday from a launch pad of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
The surface-to-surface medium-range ballistic missile, equipped with a sophisticated navigation system, is capable of hitting a target at a distance of 700 km.
The 15-metre long missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), is capable of carrying a conventional payload of 1,000 kg or a nuclear warhead.
The missile, which was earlier successfully tested in November 2015 and has been already inducted into the armed forces, was test-fired on Monday as part of Strategic Forces Command (SFC) training exercise, according to reports.
The Abdul Kalam Island, earlier called the Wheeler Island, is 150 km from Odisha's capital city, Bhubaneshwar.
The DRDO had launched the Agni project in 1983 as Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme in India.
