NRC is our brainchild, Amit Shah doesn’t know the history : Tarun Gogoi

Guwahati, July 31 (IBNS): Criticizing BJP president Amit Shah’s statement on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that it is the brainchild of the Congress and he didn’t know the history.

Tarun Gogoi questioned the BJP president and said: "Who initiated it (NRC)? It is not the BJP."

“Who planted the tree? Yes fruits grown up during their time. They (BJP) haven’t started it,” Tarun Gogoi said.

BJP MP Amit Shah on Tuesday hit out at the erstwhile UPA-led government and said in the Rajya Sabha on the NRC that the BJP-led NDA government just completing the task what Congress-led UPA couldn’t perform.

“They didn’t want NRC. Other hand, they want to postpone NRC. Even the Attorney General had appeared before the Supreme Court and asking more and more time while the Supreme Court monitoring the entire process. It is our baby during Dr Manmohan Singh time. Decision was taken during the UPA government and started also. Did he initiate? Either he doesn’t know anything. Besides, the final draft also creates problem instead of solving the problems. It is not correct and full proof documents. It contains so many leakages. Over 40 lakh people have been left out and put in completely uncertainty, insecure and vast majority are Indian citizens,” Tarun Gogoi said.

The former Assam CM further said: "He is not happy with the complete draft of NRC published on Monday by excluding over 40 lakh people."

“ I am not happy, because, it was not a full proof. I am happy with it only 65 percent. It is defective. They haven’t excluded foreigners. Large numbers of genuine Indian citizens are left out from it,” Gogoi said.
