Nicosia/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday discouraged the escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran and called for peace asserting "this is not an age of war".

In a joint address with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, Modi said the negative impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and Europe is not just restricted to the region.

"We both expressed concern regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia and Europe. Its negative impact is not limited to those regions alone.

"We both believe that this is not an era of war; resolving issues through dialogue and restoring stability is the call of humanity," said the Prime Minister.

A couple of days ago, Prime Minister Modi said he received a call from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who briefed him on the evolving situation in the Middle East.

"Received a phone call from PM @netanyahu of Israel. He briefed me on the evolving situation. I shared India's concerns and emphasized the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region," the Prime Minister said.

Iran and Israel continued to strike each other for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday, further intensifying the conflict in the region.

The Magen David Adom,  Israel's national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service, told The Times of Israel 67 people were injured in ballistic missile strikes in central Israel.

They include a woman in her 30s in serious condition, six moderately wounded, and 60 lightly hurt or suffering acute anxiety, MDA says.

According to reports, Iranian strikes in the port city of Haifa, located 90 km from Tel Aviv, left several people injured.

Tehran has launched several waves of missile attacks on Tel Aviv since Israel conducted pre-emptive strikes on Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs on Friday, escalating tension in the region.
