Narendra Modi visits Haifa, pays homage to martyred Indian soldiers
"This is the final resting place for 44 of the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I to liberate the city," PM Modi had said before visiting the site.
“Around 150 kilometers from here, there is a slice of history in the city of Haifa in Israel that is very dear to my country,” Modi had said while in Jerusalem.
In 1918, Indian soldiers fought the World War I alongside British forces.
The British had sent its 15th Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade to fight against the Ottoman and German forces at Haifa. Indian soldiers, who were part of the troop, came from the princely states of Jodhpur, Mysore and Hyderabad.
The Indian Army commemorates September 23 every year as Haifa Day to pay its respects to the two brave Indian Cavalry Regiments that helped liberate the city.
In 2012, the municipality of Haifa decided to make a memorial of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers, many of whom are buried in the cemetery.
