Mumbai's BEST buses go on strike, commuters left in the lurch

Mumbai, Aug 7 (IBNS): Mumbaikars had a harrowing time on Monday morning when the 3,800 buses operated by Bombay Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) stayed put in the depots to protest against salaries not being paid on time, according to media reports.

BEST employees affiliated to the nine unions have alleged that they have not been paid for the past three months.

BEST workers' union president Shashank Rao, has said that the employees want their salaries on time. He also said that BMC, which governs the civic transport and electricity provider public body, must give an undertaking that the workers will receive their salaries on time, media reported.

According to local media reports, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and the ruling Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray tried to prevent the strike through discussion on Sunday but failed.

Meanwhile, daily commuters and people out to celebrate Rakshabandhan, had to either submit to enhanced fares charged by autorickshaws and taxis or opt for app cabs.
