More rains set to lash Mumbai and adjoining areas over the week, says IMD; NDRF deployed
Mumbai: Heavy rains are set to lash Mumbai and Thane over the week, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted and issued yellow alerts for the two districts.
The weather agency's warning comes as rains returned to the capital city of Maharashtra after a break of a couple of days.
The civic officials said the city received an average of 95.81 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Tuesday, India Today reported.
In the same period, Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs received 115.09 mm and 116.73 mm of rainfall, respectively.
The heavy showers affected the train schedules in the CSMT-Thane section where some trains on the mainline were delayed by 10-15 minutes, the report said, adding that a few trains on harbour line were 10 minutes late.
There was no disruption in the schedules of the trains in the Trans-Harbour link and the Nerul/Belapur to Kharkopar route.
The Bandra-Sion T Junction was deluged, causing traffic snarls and forcing commuters to wade through waterlogged stretches.
A total of eight route diversions at Sion Road no. 24 and Shell Colony, Chembur in Mumbai, the PRO of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) told ANI.
On Monday, the adjoining areas of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai also received heavy rains for a short period.
Currently, a total of eight NDRF teams are present in Maharashtra with one each at Nagpur, Chiplun and Malad, while the remaining five teams are in Mumbai.
Chiplun and Mahad cities were ravaged by massive floods and several landslides last year, prompting major relief and rescue operations by the authorities.
