Xiamen, Sep 5 (IBNS) : Moving to smooth ruffled feathers in the India-China relationship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China's President Xi Jinping on Tuesday agreed that more needed to be done to avoid future border disputes,as the two talked on the sidelines of BRICS summit in the first bilateral talks after the Doklam standoff, media reports said.

During the hour-long meeting, Jinping told Modi that China wants to work with India on the principles of Panchsheel or peaceful co-existence, signed between the two countries in 1954.

"One of the most important points made during the meeting was that peace and tranquility in the border areas was a prerequisite for the further development of ties,"  Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar has been quoted as saying.

"We held fruitful talks on bilateral relations," PM Modi tweeted before leaving for Myanmar.

Jaishankar also described the meeting as "forward looking" and "constructive."

The Prime Minister, accompanied by senior officials including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and  Jaishankar met Xi Jinping.

According to Chinese media reports, Xi Jinping, who called for restoring ties with India on the "right track", said the two neighbours should pursue "healthy, stable bilateral ties.

Jaishankar told reporters that the  two leaders reiterated "to not allow differences to become disputes," and maintain good relations in mutual interest.

The last bilateral meeting Xi and Modi held was in June, when they met in Astana during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meet.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India said in a statement on last Monday that both the countries had communicated with each other regarding the Doklam issue in the last few weeks.

The military standoff in  had heightened tension at the Bhutan-India-China tri-junction in Doklam, a disputed territory claimed by both Bhutan and China, where the Indian Army personnel  reached to stop China from building a road.
