Modi government launched 'electoral bullet train', says Congress
The country's principal opposition party, the Congress, accused the Modi government for devising the same policy of announcing packages and benefits ahead of every state election.
Senior Congress leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, was quoted by NDTV as saying: "It is a matter of deep concern that while the Prime Minister once again adopted a UPA (government) project, it took him three-and-a-half years to come to this stage of laying the foundation stone. It is only timed with the Gujarat elections (slated for later this year) in mind...This is nothing but an 'electoral (chunavi) bullet train'."
However, he feels Modi will not be successful this time with the launch of the bullet train project, months before the Gujarat Assembly election.
PM Modi launched one of his dream project along with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Thursday.
The train will run between Ahmedabad and Mumbai from 2022.
The total cost of the bullet train project is Rs. 1.10 lakh crore out of which Rs. 88000 crore will be charged at 0.1% interest by Japan.
Congratulating the people of Ahmedabad and Mumbai, PM Modi said: "Bullet train brings fast pace, fast development, fast technology and fast results."
"The project will bring both the business and speed," he added.
