Mob lynching in the name of cow protection must be condemned: Arun Jaitley

New Delhi, July 20 (IBNS): Reacting to the rapid rise in mob lynching by the Gau Rakshaks across the country over the last few months, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said such activities in the name of cow protection must be condemned.

Jaitley made the statement in the Rajya Sabha, during a debate on mob lynching issue.

Going all out against the activities by the Gau Rakshaks, Jaitley said: "Any form of rationalism, explanation cannot go with it (defend it)."

One of the recent attacks which shook the nation was the stabbing of a 16 years old Junaid Khan on a Haryana bound train, who was accused of carrying beef and later attacked.

The deceased, who hails from Ballabgarh, Haryana, has been identified as Junaid, 16, who was travelling home with his brothers Haseem, Moeen and Mohsin after shopping for the upcoming Eid at Delhi's Jama Masjid.

According to a Times of India report, the group passed several communal abuses and humiliated the brothers, asking them to get out of the train.

Disapproving intolerance, the FM said in the upper house: "Our culture is to show respect as well as tolerance. Mutual respect and tolerance are both important."

Earlier, PM Modi raised his voice against these activities during a visit to his home state Gujarat. "Killing people in the name of Gau Bhakti is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve."

"We come from the land of non-violence," the PM said, "Violence won't solve any problem" he added.

However, hours after Prime Minister's condemnation on cow vigilantism, a man was killed in the state of Jharkhand for carrying beef in a car on June 29.

In another incident, Alimuddin, also known as Asgar Ansari, was driving his Maruti car while he was stopped by a mob in Ramgarh district and beaten up. Though Alimuddin was taken to a hospital by the police, he soon died.

Apart from this incident, a dairy owner was attacked three days before the Jharkhand attack by a mob after they saw the carcass of a cow. The mob resorted to set his house into fire.

Exactly a week ago, a video surfaced in Nagpur showing people beating a man for allegedly carrying beef, media reported.

The incident is said to have taken place in Bharsingi, about 80km from Nagpur.

The video revealed the man, identified as one Salim Shah, being dragged on the road and kicked repeatedly.
