Meta announces safety initiatives for India to protect women

| @indiablooms | Dec 04, 2021, at 07:29 am

Meta, formerly Facebook, has announced a series of initiatives to ensure safe online experience for Indian women across its platforms.

The initiatives include the launch of StopNCII.org to combat the spread of non-consensual intimate images (NCII).

StopNCII.org will partner with UK Revenge Porn Helpline on Meta’s NCII Pilot, an emergency program that allows potential victims to proactively hash their intimate images so they can’t be proliferated on its platforms.

Further, the Women’s Safety Hub -  launched in Hindi and 11 other Indian languages will enable more women users in India to access information about tools and resources that can help them make the most of their social media experience, while staying safe online.

"This key initiative by Meta will ensure millions of women, especially non-English speakers do not face a language barrier in accessing information easily that will enable  them to stay safe online," the company said in a statement.

Bishakha Datta, Executive Editor, Point of View and Jyoti Vadehra, Head of Media & Communications, Centre for Social Research- are the first Indian members in Meta’s Global Women’s Safety Expert Advisors.

The group comprises 12 other non-profit leaders, activists, and academic experts from different parts of the world and consults Meta in the development of new policies, products and programs to better support women on its apps.

Discussion paper by Sattva Consulting titled, ‘Connect, Collaborate and Create: Women and Social Media During the Pandemic’, was also released on the occasion.

The Meta-commissioned paper sheds light on measures to address the sharp gender imbalance in social media usage in India.
