Guwahati, Aug 21 (IBNS) : Meghalaya police have arrested two top leaders of Manipur based insurgent group Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF).

Based on intelligence input, a team of Meghalaya police on Monday arrested the Chairman and Information Secretary of the outfit in West Jaintia Hills district.

The Meghalaya police team caught the Manipur based outfit’s Chairman 66-year-old Raitu Chawang and Information Secretary 43-year-old Gengchung Pou Namthuiyang from a bus while they were travelling from Assam’s Silchar to Guwahati via West Jaintia Hills.

Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Jaintia Hills district said that, the police team caught them from the bus during checking.

“They had admitted that, they are leaders of the Manipur based outfit group ZUF. We had seized four mobile phones and other incriminating documents in possession from them,” the top Meghalaya cop said.

Syiem further said that, they were produced before a local court and sent them to judicial custody.

“They are wanted in Manipur for five cases under Arms Act and Manipur’s Tamenglong district SP is sending a team to take custody of two ZUF leaders,” Syiem said.

ZUF was formed in 2011 and active in Manipur’s Tamenglong district and adjoining areas.
