Shillong, Feb 18 : Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and candidate of the Williamnagar assembly constituency in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district Jonathone Nengminza Sangma was allegedly shot dead by suspected militants on Sunday evening.

Sources said that two bodyguards of the NCP candidate were also killed in the militants attack.

The incident reportedly took place at Sawilgre Samanda area in the hilly district at around 7-50 pm.

The suspected militants were attacked while Jonathone, after attending election campaign meetings at Sobokgre and Nabokgre, was on his way back to Williamnagar.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya DGP SB Singh said that police are yet to confirm the report.

Meghalaya is going to hold the Assembly poll on February 27.
