Mamata leaves wheelchair, stands up for national anthem at Nandigram

Nandigram/IBNS: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee left her wheelchair and stood on her feet to join her party members during the national anthem in a public meeting in Nandigram, said a Hindustan Times report.

The Trinamool Congress chief is facing a stiff contest from her former aide and now BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in the West Bengal assembly polls.

Banerjee was heard saying that she wanted to get back on her feet for joining her party members in singing the national anthem, the HT report stated.

Within moments, Banerjee attempted to stand up on her feet and managed to rise from her wheelchair, much to the anxiety of those present on the stage, including Rajya Sabha MP Subrata Bakshi, said the report.

On Mar 10 after filing her nomination in Nandigram, Banerjee was injured and she went ahead accusing four-five unidentified people pushing the door of her car to hit her left ankle while she was greeting people in Birulia.

"Four-five men pushed me to the car... I am having deep pain. See my leg got swollen. I am having slight temperature as well and having chest pain," the Chief Minister, who was rushed to Kolkata's SSKM Hospital within hours, had said.

Banerjee was discharged from SSKM hospital four days after her injury. She had announced she would resume her campaigning in a wheelchair, something which is unprecedented in Bengal politics, within a few days.

Earlier in the day, a wheelchair-bound Banerjee even led a 'padyatra' (foot march) in Nandigram's Bhagabeda.

Tuesday was the last day of campaigning for Phase 2 of the assembly polls, slated for April 1.
