Kolkata, Dec 24 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid homage to singing legend Mohammad Rafi on his birth anniversary.

"Homage to legendary singer Mohammad Rafi on his birth anniversary," she tweeted.

Rafi was notable for his versatility; his songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans.

He was known for his ability to mould his voice to the persona of the actor, lip-synching the song on screen in the movie.

The singer was born on Dec 24, 1924.

He passed away on July 31, 1980.
