Mamata Banerjee condoles loss of lives in UP stampede

Kolkata, Oct 15 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday condoled the loss of lives in the stampede incident in Uttar Pradesh.

"Very saddened after hearing about stampede in Varanasi. So many precious lives lost. Condolences to all families who lost loved ones," Banerjee tweeted.

A stampede incident at Rajghat bridge between Varanasi and Chandauli in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday killed at least 24 people, media reports said.

The incident left several others injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives and injuries sustained by the persons in the stampede at Rajghat bridge between Varanasi and Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh.

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the stampede in Varanasi. Condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers with those injured," Modi said.

"I have spoken to officials and asked them to ensure all possible help to those affected due to the stampede in Varanasi,” the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakh each to the next of kin of the persons deceased and Rs.50,000 each to the persons who got seriously injured, from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

The incident occurred when followers of Jai Gurudev had gathered at the bridge, reports said.
