Magnitude 5.9 Richter Scale earthquake hits Assam, no casualties

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale hit 14 kilometres east of Assam's Udalguri town on Sunday.

The depth of the earthquake was 10 kms.

Strong tremors were felt in Assam's Guwahati city.

According to reports, tremors were also felt in the neighbouring North Bengal region of West Bengal state and in Bhutan, the Himalayan nation.

No damage to property or life has been reported so far.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on X: "Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone's safety and well-being. "

He urged people to stay alert.

This earthquake was recorded just days after a 3.5 magnitude quake struck Sonitpur in Assam on September 2.
