Mumbai, Sep 20 (IBNS) : Life started crawling back to normal in Mumbai with surface transport resuming services as the met department announced that the "worst is over" even though heavy rains pounded the city for the second day on Wednesday, reports said.

However, schools and colleges remained shut through the day as a precautionary measure and dabbawalas have  cancelled their delivery of over two lakh tiffins to office goers in the city.

Weather department has removed warning (for heavy rainfall). Intermittent rainfall likely over city and suburbs for next 48 hours.

According to reports, the  trains on the Western Line are running, though late by 10 to 15 minutes.

The long distance trains which were regulated and stranded at various locations due to heavy water-logging at Nallasopara, Virar have been cleared.

Traffic movement  has eased in most areas as the waterlogging has reduced significantly.

According to MeT department figures, Mumbai suburbs recorded a whopping 304 mm rainfall Wednesday morning.

It was  the third highest downpour in a single day since the great Mumbai floods when the city experienced 945 mm rains, followed by 316 mm on August 29 this year.

Several parts of the metropolis, including South Mumbai, Borivali, Kandivili, Andheri and Bhandup, received heavy rainfall.

The heavy downpour forced disruption in flight operations at the airport and delayed suburban train services in the financial capital.

Flight operations, remain affected at Mumbai airport. Delays in arrival and departure of flights continue due to fluctuating weather. Main runway to remain shut till 2 pm.

Flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport were affected for around half an hour due to low visibility in the evening, and seven flights were diverted. A passenger plane overshot on landing at Mumbai airport due to wet surface. There was no report of any damage as all 183 passengers were deplaned safely.
